Tutor – An Eclectic Approach

Tutor – An Eclectic Approach

For the teacher training we from TUTOR want to follow an eclectic approach, combining Transformative Learning with Universal Design for Learning, Emotional Learning and Cultural Awareness.

As Transformative Learning transforms teachers into advocates for diversity and inclusion, integrating these frameworks contributes to a more equitable and supportive education system.

Each framework contributes distinct elements to the overall goal of inclusive education:

The principles of Universal Design for Learning provide a framework for designing inclusive instructional materials and methods that cater to diverse learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds.

Emotional Learning fosters emotional intelligence, which is crucial for creating a supportive and inclusive classroom atmosphere.

Cultural Awareness deepens teachers’ understanding of cultural nuances, enabling them to adapt teaching methods to be more inclusive and culturally responsive.

Transformative Learning: the basic theory for training teachers for inclusive education

Transformative Learning: the basic theory for training teachers for inclusive education

We from TUTOR think that transformative learning is essential for an inclusive education.

Why? It provides teachers with a framework to critically examine their own beliefs, attitudes, and assumptions. This framework enables them to create a welcoming and supportive classroom environment for students from diverse backgrounds. More specifically, transformative learning is vital to inclusive teaching and learning because it provides:

• Increased self-awareness

• Empathy and understanding

• Mitigating prejudice

• Shifting perspectives

• Adapting teaching strategies

• Creating safe learning spaces

• Promoting critical thinking

• Enhancing communication skills

• Positive role models

• Equal Opportunity

In summary, transformative learning is essential to inclusive teaching because it promotes self-awareness, empathy, and critical thinking, which are fundamental competencies for teachers to create a classroom environment where all students feel valued, respected, and empowered to learn and succeed.

This way, teachers become advocates for diversity and inclusion, contributing to a more equitable and supportive education system.

Our Digital Village – Scientific Article

Our Digital Village – Scientific Article

Overall, 48 participants were reached across 9 workshops in Austria. In these workshops, youth expressed a desire for more than just basic digital skills. They are eager to explore new and emerging technologies and emphasized the importance of online security. Additionally, the results indicate that schools and educational institutions play a crucial role in promoting digital competencies and offering advanced-level courses. It is necessary for local authorities to develop more online platforms and services tailored to the community’s needs. Furthermore, participants emphasized the importance of collective learning and training to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, feels competent in using digital tools. Each participating country therefore created a national report to summarize the findings. All national reports contribute to the scientific article. The article outlines the workshop structure, our approach, the research questions addressed, and the findings. It explores various aspects, such as the definition and significance of digital skills, and how individuals rely on them in diverse contexts.

First Phase of Tutor Research: Upskilling needs + results Phase

First Phase of Tutor Research: Upskilling needs + results Phase

We have now taken the final step in our research, namely to determine the need for teacher training in inclusive education.

For this, we have conducted a gap analysis by comparing our research results about the desired and the existing teacher skills, using the robust MAXQDA software.

In a first round, we generated three themes: training needs in terms of competencies, skills and understandings. Subsequently, we introduced a variety of subcodes within each theme. Finally, we detailed specific skills that are required.

In Austria, for example these were the most important skills that were categorised as requiring improvment:

• Recognizing the varied needs of students from diverse backgrounds
• Serving as role models by setting positive examples, connecting with students through personal narratives
• Developing a comprehensive awareness of diversity aspects
• Cultivating relevant conflict management and mediation skills
• Prioritizing self-care and implementing strategies for burnout prevention

We will soon be making the most important research results available for download on our website
