What did we find out? – The existing state in Austria

What did we find out? – The existing state in Austria

The focus group stressed the importance of spreading awareness about the issue. This should be initiated and actively supported by the management, especially for colleagues less engaged in these matters.

The survey found room to improve teaching staff’s knowledge in inclusive education. Many have basic training, but there are gaps in attitudes and skills for diverse students. Educators are keen on further training, especially those familiar with inclusive education topics. Despite generally high self-ratings, there are opportunities for improvement.
The Interviews found discrepancies between inclusive education goals and their implementation in Austria.

Respondents suggest teacher training, practice changes, and support for teachers. Issues include inadequate education, time allocation, class size, cooperation, and addressing discrimination and social concerns. These changes are crucial for an inclusive education system.

In response, we’ve devised a strategic plan:

• Comprehensive Training Program: Address knowledge gaps, attitudes, and skills, and stay current with educational needs.

• Targeted Outreach: Raise awareness about inclusivity and diversity.

• Accurate Self-Assessment: Provide workshops and assessments for better skill understanding.

For a detailed explanation of how TUTOR plans to approach these challenges, please stay tuned for our upcoming post, or you can also visit our website for more information.

5-day Design-Thinking Workshop

5-day Design-Thinking Workshop

In the last week of November, we had the pleasure of hosting a transformative 5-day Design-Thinking Workshop as part of the Sassi-Later Life Careers Project.

Goal of the workshop was to empower individuals aged 55 and above, including older workers, unemployed people, and unretirees who still wish to be active in their later life. A diverse group of 13 individuals from Bulgaria, Germany, Slovakia, and Austria came together to blend their experiences, exchange insights, and collectively work on the design of innovative transnational business ideas.

At the conclusion of the workshop, two very interesting prototypes for transnational businesses in the field of migration and counselling were presented by the participants. A big thank you to all the participants who brought their passion and expertise to the table.

First Phase of Tutor Research: Existing state- how did we gather the Information?

First Phase of Tutor Research: Existing state- how did we gather the Information?

First, we needed to find out the existing state. But how did we do this?

To gather such Information, we used three Methods: Focus Groups, Interviews and Online Surveys. The focus group and the Interview provide qualitative insights, allowing finding out personal knowledge and experiences.

Meanwhile the online survey provided quantitative data to gather information on a larger scale and identify potential patterns. Focus Groups: Seven educators (4 female, 3 male), aged 25–40, engaged in discussions on inclusive teaching, providing qualitative insights from diverse perspectives.

Interviews: Following the Chatham House Rule, one-on-one discussions with teachers and students allowed for in-depth insights while preserving anonymity and organizational affiliations. Online Surveys: Anonymous and taking 30 minutes, our survey invited secondary school teachers to assess skills and share perspectives on inclusive teaching, aiming to evaluate proficiency and gather diverse opinions.

First Phase of Tutor Research- Desired Phase

First Phase of Tutor Research- Desired Phase

What did we find out for the desired phase?

Austria:

To promote the well-being of LGBTQ+ students, public spaces must be free from discrimination, homophobia, and transphobia.
To achieve this:

• LGBTQ+ students need someone, especially teachers, to confide in about LGBTQ+ issues.
• Openly LGBTQ+ teachers should be present.
• Teachers must actively address anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination.
• Schools should provide informative materials.
• LGBTQ+ topics should be openly discussed in the classroom.
• Raising awareness and establishing clear guidelines to combat discrimination are essential steps.

Inclusive education aims to make education more accessible and ensure equal learning experiences for all students.

To improve inclusive education:

• Increase awareness of diversity and inclusion through training.
• Provide information about minority groups, addressing historical discrimination.
• Incorporate systemic approaches into teaching methodology.
• Develop practical lessons rooted in real-life experiences.
• Educate teachers on guiding individual learning processes in a resource-oriented manner.

Improving Initial Teacher Education is very important to effectively implement inclusive education and address changing student demographics.
